Arrowmont: Reminders

Springtime at Arrowmont School for Arts & Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN

I spent just shy of a week at Arrowmont Pentaculum Artist Residency in May, 2024. Although it was short, it was so, so sweet, and full of deep connection both internal and external. So consumed by the experience as it unfolded, I took very few pictures. Here’s a handful (or so) of the reminders I captured when I was there so I can try to hang onto them for as long as possible:

  • Raise your hand if someone offers an opportunity you’re really interested in, and find a way to make it happen.

  • Listen to peoples’ stories and ask more questions to peel back the layers.

  • A well-organized, stocked, and labeled studio is magical.

  • Be unapologetically yourself, without shame. It will be OK.

  • As someone who is impossibly slow to trust, it can be easy in the right environment and with the right people. Seek those people out.

  • Show up for others (like the writers’ reading nights!) and they will show up for you.

  • Perfection and productivity may be prized, but play and laughter are essential.

  • Instead of being intimidated and silenced by others’ talent, be inspired. And ask questions! (This group was so talented and accomplished, and still so inquisitive, still sharing recommendations on a running group text!)

  • Donate weird art and buy raffle tickets for weird (and gorgeous) art in return, especially for scholarships.

  • Oh! Always make a pitstop in Knoxville on your way to Penland or Arrowmont to get sourdough crust pizza at A Dopo. (2nd year in a row!)

  • Nametags are annoying but useful - people like hearing their own name. They can even get you a free ski-lift ride to walk among the treetops.

  • Scarcity mindset is only a mindset. SHARE! Be open. Make things happen!

  • Care. Care. CARE!!!
