You Are Special. Just Like Everyone Else.

Simple materials in familiar shapes. Recognizable, comforting.

Soft rope, the process of weaving, making multiples, meditation. Woven, over and under, over and under, a repetitive process. Grids, organized and structured. Rules, familiarity, process. Expectations met and no surprises. This is a comfort zone.

My intention with this work was to create a perfectly formed grid of perfectly formed woven pieces, exhibiting my ability to control, to organize, to structure, shape, predict. I would codify comfort by hardening it with plaster, freezing it into place forever. I needed to force perfection through rigidity and pressure. But the little weavings fought back, instead twisting and pulling and dancing in resistance. I tried everything to keep the weavings under control but stitches and glues were no match. I finally... let.. go.

Inviting softness and acceptance into the process allowed the repetitive and familiar shapes, once nearly identical, to become individual expressions. Where I had been looking for one outcome - one organized and controlled grid of same-ness, no individual expression - I found something entirely more beautiful. Each individual weaving, perfectly good enough on its own, and even better as part of the whole.
