Hard // Soft
A material study intended to explore the use of common and familiar soft goods (rope, bedsheets, string) conveyed into comforting knit or woven shapes then fixed into hardness via a variety of methods. This is part of my ongoing inquiry about comfort, commonly known for softness, familiarity, and ease. But sometimes we find comfort in assurance, reliability, even control over circumstances.
The more I exerted control over this work, the less successful it became. This opened up the possibility to consider beauty in a dialogue, listening to the way materials respond in conversation.
Iām grateful to the Arrowmont Pentaculum Residency program for the opportunity to explore these questions.
